UK; Postgraduate Studentship Modelling of Flow in Fluidic Devices

Flow control using fluidic devices is of interest for turbomachinery internal air system design and optimisation. Since they have no moving parts these devices could be ideal for use in the challenging engine environment where reliability is paramount. However, further study is needed to improve understanding of flow behaviour in such devices and to develop designs suitable for this application. This research project will develop and apply computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for fluidic devices, evaluating models by comparison with experimental data, and applying appropriate models to gain more insight. This is likely to include detailed study of transient behaviour. The research will contribute to ongoing developments in computer modelling of turbomachinery in the Rolls-Royce supported University Technology Centre.

Candidates must hold at least a UK upper second class honours degree, or its equivalent, in engineering, science or mathematics with excellent research and communication skills, and demonstrable knowledge in fluid flow and numerical methods. Additional knowledge and experience in computer programming skills would be considered favourably.

The Thermo-Fluid Systems University Technology Centre (TFSUTC) is an established activity in the Fluids Research Centre which covers a broad range of research topics in experimental and computational fluid dynamics. Currently, there are about 20 academic and research staff and about 20 postgraduate research students.

The award is sponsored by Rolls-Royce plc and covers “home student” tuition fees and a stipend of £16,290 per year for 3 years or overseas student tuition fees and a stipend of £13,290 per year for 3 years.
