Costs and Scholarships

The University of Stavanger is a state university and does not charge tuition fees. However, all students are required to pay a registration fee of NOK 700. Our International Degree Programmes offered in English language have a veryl imited number of scholarships available. Therefore, students should be prepared to self-finance their education in Norway,

Cost of living
Norway is one of the most expensive countries in the world and it is difficult to know how much a student is likely to spend during a year. However, as a student you can access discounts and significantly reduce your expenses. Manage your budget well and you can enjoy a wide range of activities. Proces for student housing varies from approx. NOK 2200 - NOK 3100/month.

Financing your studies
Although the university does not charge tuition fees, it is important to bear in mind that the Directorate of Immigration (UDI) requires that applicants for a Norwegian resident permit (student visa) must be ensured subsistence means for the period to which the application relates. Since only a limited number of scholarships is available, applicants should be prepared to apply as self-financing students.

All applicants should be able to document financial means equivalent to full funding by the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund at the current rate. For the academic year 2010/2011 this amounts to NOK 87.600 (approx. USD 13.000/ EUR 10.500) that is intended to cover living expenses. If you plan to stay for one semester only half of the amount is required. This does not include your airfare to and from Norway but should include all costs once you arrive here (food, housing, books, entertainment, excursions, etc.). With good budgeting skills, this amount should be more than sufficient.

The Quota Scheme
The number of scholarships available under this scheme is very limited and scholarships are addressed exclusively to candidates from institutions with formal collaboration agreements with the University of Stavanger. Read more about the Quota Scheme at the University of Stavanger. The application for Quota scholarship is possible after the prescreening process (in January).

Scholarships financed by the Stavanger University Fund for Master degree students at the Department of Petroleum Engineering
The yearly amount granted is sufficient to cover regular fees, books and living expenses for the academic year (10 months). An additional amount may be given to cover part of the travel to Norway when the programme starts, and back to the home country when it is finished. Partial financial aid may also be granted for an annual trip home when the programme lasts for more than one year.
The grant holders must accept an obligation to do assistantship work for the Department of Petroleum Engineering or local oil related industry while in Stavanger, limited to a maximum of 10 hours pr. week.

Please note that there are no scholarships available for the Norwegian Language and Culture Programme!
